THE WONDERS OF SCIENCE, May 2012

   Teentech 2012 14    Teentech 2012 9

Another year of the award-winning one-day event, Teen Tech, which aims to challenge Year 8 students' concept of STEM and STEM-related careers, was held at the Royal Ascot Racecourse.

Teen Tech rallied up an inspiring and intriguing array of industry professionals with stalls ready to engage the young people in scientific pursuits. School teams circulated between the Challenge Zone and the Insight zone to participate in various activites.

There were models of F1 track racing from EIM F1, a quadcopter from Universal Air, as well as a working rollar coaster model from the Coaster Club. Students tested the land speed record on the Bloodhound SS1 simulator, whereby the actual car aims to achieve 1,000mph.

Syngenta discussed chemistry and biology; X-rais with thermal imaging and Institute of Cancer Research with diagnostic ultrasound imaging. Seavision had a Wayfarer Yacht and Atkins revealed how to make a model from recyclable materials.

Very befitting of the times with the encroaching Para-Olympics were Blachfords' artifical limbs for Para-athletes that the students were able to try on, quickly discovering the precise skill involved in merely getting about on one!

We hope the photos of the day can do the colourful event justice - and express how much the students enjoyed learning from the variety of business reps from the industry!

BUSINESS BENEFACTOR, May 2012

mcfarlane

We have all heard that the percentage of young people at risk of becoming NEET (not in education, employment or training) is rising.

The BIONIC project, of which the EBeBP is appointed delivery partner, specifically engages these young people. The project relies on businesses offering the support vital to motivate and influence; without such businesses, young people at risk of becoming NEET would be without the intrinsic link to the working world.

Thank you to McFarlane, who are supporting the BIONIC project as well as taking on invaluable extended work experience placements to give these young people opportunity to fulfill a rewarding career.

Buildings are also getting a makeover, including a new e-learning centre to be completed by September. Headteacher, Mr Chaaban, has come from an imminent background as global Head of IT for an international bank. His business expertise brings innovation, motivation and enthusiasm. "I genuinely believe the students will succeed."

BRACKNELL MATHS MARATHON COMPETITION, March 2012

Mathematicians of the future gathered at 3M on March 21 for the announcement of the winners of this year's Bracknell Maths Marathon competition.

17 Bracknell Forest primary schools - over 600 students - teamed up to compete in three rounds of mathematical challenges, each set to a time limit. It's a tricky challenge and fiercly competitive, often with the winning teams coming within a fraction of a mark between them!

The talented team that took home the trophy were Meadow Vale Primary: Manveen Judge, Barrry Gristwood and Lucy Cowdell.

The Mayor of the Borough of Bracknell Forest, Councillor Chris Turrell and the Mayoress Ms Dinana Henfrey were in attendance and presented certificates and prizes to the children: an HD Video Camera for first prize winners; a Lumix Digital Camera for Whitegrove Primary School in second place; and an HD Mobile Camera for Cranbourne Primary School students in third place.

Thank you to Panasonic UK Ltd for donating the incredible prizes in which the students were thrilled to receive. Thank you also to Syngenta for printing the thousands of booklets for the students to work from, and to Rachel Bradley, the Primary Advisor for Bracknell Forest Council who had the responsibility of marking the final papers.

BLOWING OUR OWN TRUMPET, March 2012

It's always important for us to receive positive feedback about our work especially in a difficult time such as this; it reaffirms why we do what we do and offers a real boost to ensure we keep it up!

We promise not to blow our own trumpet too often but we would like to share this one with you:

"At a time when young people are facing unprecedented difficulties in the job market EBP's work linking businesses and schools is more important than ever. Slough has some great schools and a brilliant range of companies, EBP can make the best of both and by building partnerships between schools and companies they can create opportunities for young people to prepare themselves for working life.  That will help local employers to use the talents of our young people to build the success of their business." - Fiona Mactaggart MP Slough

DRESSING TO IMPRESS, February 2012

It may come as common knowledge to those of us already in the work force, but young people who have never had any work experience are often not sure what is expected of them, particularly when it comes to that sticky issue of what to wear to work!

Here is an article featured in the Slough Observer about Long Close Year 10 students receiving some informative advice and practical tasks from one of our informative workshops that deals with this very topic of dressing to impress.

O2 APPRENTICES LEAD THE WAY, February 2012

In celebration of National Apprenticeship Week, O2 Telefonica in Slough opened their doors to a day of apprenticeship endorsement. In the morning, over 60 Year 8 Students built and programmed robots under the guidance of O2 apprentices. Following this, local businesses from the East Berkshire area learnt about the momentous value apprenticeships offer to employers and how the qualification contributes to shifting young people into successful careers.

The day spurred a positive conviction to secure business growth as well as support youth employment in the Berkshire area, beginning with O2's own apprentices collaborating with the Year 8 students.  Forming 20 groups, the apprentices and students worked together to conquer LEGO® MINDSTORMS technology, the robots using sound and light sensors to negotiate a race track. And then the race took off! O2 Colleagues, business guests, local dignitaries' including Fiona Mactaggart MP and the Mayor of Slough joined senior management and the CEO of O2, Ronan Dunne, to watch in anticipation.

The afternoon offered opportunity for likeminded businesses - large and small, global and independent - to network regarding the qualification, with O2's positive model as example.

O2 is committed to further developing their apprenticeship scheme by launching two new initiatives. One, an apprentice forum, is being hosted by O2 in Slough. This will enable local businesses to join an informal network to share good practises, support neighbouring business interested in running an apprenticeship scheme, and generally establish a support network.

The other initiative is in conjunction with the EBeBP and follows through on the morning spent constructing robots: O2 apprentices will continue their involvement with the LEGO Controlled Technology in local schools, enabling more students to participate in the project.

Below are some quotes on apprenticeships that were recorded on the day:

Fiona Mactaggart MP, Slough:  "In partnership with the East Berkshire Education Business Partnership, I am delighted that O2 is inviting other local businesses along to promote the role that apprenticeships can play in building successful companies and giving opportunities to young people."

Ronan Dunne, CEO Telefonica UK Limited: "I believe that apprenticeships can help unlock the potential of young people and open the door for them to enjoy successful and fulfilling careers.  We are very proud of the apprentices we have at O2, so I am delighted that they are playing a prominent role in today's event at our head office.  Young people need our support.  I am pleased that O2 is bringing local businesses and school children together to celebrate and raise awareness of apprenticeships."

Karen Green, Enterprise Enrichment Officer, Westgate School: "Students thrive on the opportunities offered to them to go into the workplace.  The event at O2 was instrumental in allowing year 8 to see what it's like to be employment and to be working for a large corporate company.  The Apprentice information was also very helpful, especially to the teachers.  It was a great day and would be welcome the opportunity of to participating in other similar events."

Nancy Lalor, Head of Work Based Learning, EBeBP: "The event at O2 Telefonica was a great success and brought together  a wide range of people of all ages to celebrate and raise awareness of "Apprenticeships",  whether it was by having fun and working along side the O2 apprentice team or finding out more about the scheme in general the day had something for everyone.  There was a constant buzz, air of excitement and enthusiasm all day as well as everyone leaving with a little more understanding and knowledge of the O2 way of working. Thinking Big is the way forward!

The Worshipful the Mayor of Slough (Councillor Sukhjit Dhaliwal): "We are thrilled to have such enthusiasm from businesses and the town in respect of apprenticeships, this demonstrates the vision that we have for the future in Slough and the focus we are now placing on the developing workforce for the future of Slough.  My thanks go to O2 and the EBP for making this event happen in our local town."

CAREERS FAIRS APLENTY, February 2012

The Careers Fair at Charters School on February 3 was featured in the Wokingham Times. BRACKNELL CAREERS FAIR, February 2012

The EBeBP were proud to be shining a bright light in the world of careers for young people last week with the Bracknell Careers Fair. Over 75 exhibitors were on show at the Capitol Building and hundreds of young people from around the area came to explore their choices.

Companies exhibiting included 3M, Syngenta, Royal Mail, Ferrari and Panasonic. Other exhibitors included Army Careers, Thames Valley Police as well as colleges and universities, training and apprenticeship providers and volunteer bureaus. This broad range provided every student with something to take away and think about further.

The students were also given two brief presentations; one on the pathways open to them after school and the other by John Kemp of Ferrari who provided an apprenticeship view.

The event was a collaboration between the Bracknell Forest Partnership and the EBeBP. First Buses kindly agreed to transport the students to the Capitol Building and Sainsbury's provided the sandwich lunches. A student from one of the schools who attended said, "there has been lots of advice available and it has been invaluable."

During the evening, young people of all ages and their parents were invited back to an open session where they were able to take advantage of the exhibitors, as well as having the option of motivational sessions presented by the business volunteers around CV writing and interview techniques.

The fantastic support of these businesses and their contribution of time and knowledge made a difference to the young people by showing just how much choice there is out there. Rachael Keely, the Head of Work Based Learning at the EBeBP, said, "The fair is really about getting the young people ready so when they come out into the market-place they know what they want."

YOUNG PEOPLE: "WE WANT WORK EXPERIENCE!" January, 2012

So what exactly do young people think about gaining the skills they need for work?Young People had their say in the Berkshire survey, undertaken in November 2011. 1,687 young people aged between 16-18 years took part. Here are the findings:

1509 young people (almost 90%) believed work experience was important to receive the most effective preparation for work.

Over 70% of young people wanted the opportunity to experience a work placement that was linked specifically to a curriculum subject.

The key areas of work-ready learning for young people involved gaining confidence through a work experience placement; whilst also receiving pre-work prep, such as practise interviews and application process guidance, primarily through business mentoring.

87.7% of the respondents were school students, whilst 12.3% were from colleges or other education providers.

Through the BEBPO review in July 2011 businesses established that work experience is the best way to offer support of work-ready learning, as well as being the most effective method for generating confidence and relevant skills in young people.

It is evident, then, that the acquisition of employability skills via a work placement is what young people want, just as employers are equally interested in ensuring that young people receive the right foundation for their entry into the work force by offering placements.

If you are an employer and interested in how to support work related learning, please contact us.

EMPLOYERS VIEW STUDENTS AS POSITIVE CONTRIBUTION, December 2011

A survey was conducted with 182 local businesses within Berkshire who had either participated in work-ready programmes or who had hosted a work placement for a young person.

The survey was conducted in July 2011 by BEBPO - Berkshire Education Business Partnership Organisation, of which the EBeBP is a member, in light of the government reductions to work-related funding available to schools.

The survey findings confirm that employers remain insistent upon the importance of work ready learning; educating young people in such skills is vital to implementing a smooth transition into the work force. "Young people are our future" was a common reflection of employers.

Consequently, work experience placements were viewed by 77% of respondents as being the most effective method for equipping young people with relevant skills. Employers viewed students as a positive contribution that engaged staff in new ways.

Involving a third party organisation was viewed by businesses as being necessary for work placement arrangements.

Of the 182 businesses who undertook the Work Readiness Survey, 55% were local businesses that ranged from major global corporates to small local enterprises; to education providers (responding as employers not educators); public sector and third sector organisations.

From a relatively diverse group of respondents the findings echo the principles behind the BEBPO: that work-ready learning is a fundamental foundation to the future workforce and that work experience placements are the most effective in support of achieving this.

CAREERS FAIR IN JANUARY, December 2011

Choosing a career is a daunting prospect. Many young people have no idea where they want to work, whilst others can't decide which company or field would be the best fit for them.

In this difficult economic climate where unemployment is high and competition for prospective roles is fierce, having a clearer idea about the choices available is not only a process of clarification but also an enlightening step to discovering that there are plenty of options out there.

January 25 in the Capitol Building in Bracknell offers a full day of career choices for young people; businesses and organisations set up displays to inform and inspire. From 8am - 8pm young people are welcome to engage with global corporates as well as local third sector organisations. Open to all.

Bracknell News have published an article about the event. Take a read and then visit the website:  www.bfcareers.co.uk

EMPLOYERS SEEK A BALANCE OF SKILLS, December 2011

The BBC has featured some excellent videos that reinforce the importance of balance between qualifications and work-ready skills in applicants. Senior employers and employees speak about what kind of applicants are suited to their niche market: manufacturing, retail, visual effects and engineering.

We believe the employees of these rather varied fields emphaise what the EBeBP consistently works towards achieving: instilling the work-ready skills in young people that employers seek, in addition to the relevant qualifications.

We've all heard it enough this year how increasingly difficult it is to find employment; for once this is a refreshing perspective, one that motivates the future applicant when competing in this fierce job market.

ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING SUMMARY, December 2011

The EBeBP's recent AGM reviewed the academic year from August 2010 - July 2011. The year's accomplishments were drawn up in a Summary of Achievements. We thought our little list of activities and figures was quietly impressive and thereby, would like to share them with you here.

MAX THE CASH WINNERS, December 2011

Young entrepreneurs of East Berkshire gathered at SEGRO for the final of Max the Cash on December 5. The winning team was Westgate School, who maximised their £100 investment to reach a total of £1326 through a clever business plan and various fundraising methods.

The total sum raised by the teams of £3641 was donated to Thames Hospicecare.

Westgate students' impressed the judges through their range of products and services implemented to raise the impressive £1326. The students negotiated a discount price on Millies Cookies to maximise their profit as well as selling donuts to O2. The students captured video footage of their sales skills, broadcast in their presentation at the Final.

Windsor Girls' received the prize for Best Business Plan. The Business and Economics A-Level students applied their learning to the competition by conducting market research in school to discover lucrative fundraising methods. The students employed 6 different activities to raise their funds. One of these included a Pamper Evening and all leftover stock was resold at other events.

The prize for Innovation went to Slough and Eton School. There is nothing like gaining an understanding of the third sector market place: the Slough & Eton team visited Thames Hospicecare to understand the necessities for raising funds. The students' appetite for a challenge led them to avoid the easy root of hosting a mufti day at school; instead they opted for the emphasis on 8 fun money-making activities.

SEGRO, who  sponsored the competition and hosted the final in their head office in Slough, were very impressed with the teams and their efforts and are incredibly proud to be involved in the initiative.

Junior Apprentice contenders for the upcoming season to work with Lord Sugar may have some hefty competition here.

ETON TECHNOLOGY CHALLENGE, November 2011

The Eton Technology Challenge on November 3 saw Year 10 students from various schools around East Berkshire working on designing a buggy that could race around a set track, whilst also taking into consideration cost implications of the buggy's production.

This longstanding technology event held in Eton College's great hall has built partnership between Eton College and the schools of East Berkshire.

Each year, students arrive to the challenge unaware of what task will be set and are in anticipation until the very last moment. The emphasis on team-work and problem-solving within a competitive environment always provides for innovative and edgy designs from the student' teams.

SEGRO SPONSOR MAX THE CASH COMPETITION, October 2011

Max the Cash has received a superb sponsorship boost from SEGRO. Those schools not able to enter the competition last year now have the opportunity to involve their students in the motivating fundraising challenge, as the sponsorship has enabled the EBeBP to reduce our administration charges.

SEGRO has also invested in providing the competing teams with business mentors. An enormous bonus for the students, who benefit greatly from the expertise and the principles of business practise from mentor's input that they can apply to fundraising for the competition.

The final, on December 5, will be held at the SEGRO head office in Slough, the company's generosity stretching to the students' prizes and the trophy for the winning team. This year, the competition just got more inspiring!

O2 WORKS SOME INSPIRATIONAL MAGIC, October 2011

One of the EBeBP's influential work-related learning programmes was spectacularly hosted at the O2 head office on October 11 during their Global Volunteering Day and students got to be a part of the action. All was in recognition of Telefonica's Think Big programme.

90 students from East Berkshire schools were set to work with over 90 O2 employees, the students benefiting immensely from the experts themselves. On arrival students were encouraged to network with other school students before being officially greeted by Glenn Manoff who began the day with a very motivational welcome.

Students then actively participated in a series of workshops run by O2 volunteers including The Exciting World of Devices, Interview Techniques, Business Operations, IT, Finance & Networks.  They were also given a guided tour of the impressive site by the O2 Apprentices.

Nancy Lalor, the Head of Work Based Learning at the EBeBP, said, "The feedback from students was so positive with an amazing 100% feeling more inspired and motivated about joining the world of work." One student had this to say about the day:

"I think that students can really benefit from these kinds of workshops. they    really boost your confidence and help you with knowing what to expect when going to an interview (and) we got to learn a whole lot about O2 as a business."

For all involved the day was an immense success and in support of this the EBeBP are seeking to roll out the O2 model to other corporates. The benefits of running an EBeBP workshop on business premises are endless to employees and the workforce of tomorrow.

Both the Observer and the Slough Express featured the successful event on October 14. For further pictures take a look at our Photo Gallery.

The students were instructed to construct a motorised Connex car in groups; the catch being that each student could only use one arm and therefore, had to rely on the assistance of everyone in their group to complete the task! The students had a fantastic time, whilst also realising the importance of communication skills and team support in order to come together toward one goal.

THE EBeBP IN A GOOD LIGHT, September 2011

Whether you are familiar with the projects the EBeBP offer local schools, or whether this is the first visit to our website, we are pleased to be able to share a perspective from a business volunteer
on how she found the experience of working with students on one of our projects:

"Being part of the British Airways Community Investment team I am always happy to support East Berks EBP with their work within local schools. Khalida Barker and I have run some Customer Service sessions within a local boys school which gave us the wonderful opportunity to put ourselves slightly outside our comfort zones and stretch yourselves. With the fabulous support of the team it proved to be a fabulous morning meeting some very interesting students. It was great challenge but we felt we reached the students by making the customer service sessions fun and relate to them." Sarah Webb, British Airways.

EMPLOYEES HEAD BACK TO SCHOOL, October 2010

October has seen schools opening their doors to businesses all across the UK. The Visit Our Schools week, from October 18, was run by the Education and Employers Taskforce with business links through the EBeBP.

The week aimed to shine new light on education today for employees.

Employees have the opportunity to pull up a chair and experience how a typical school functions and once again, have a chance to walk the corridors. Essentially, both schools and businesses can celebrate working in partnership, highlighting benefits to business and education and discuss priority areas for growth.

The opportunity gained though Visit Our Schools not only fused links between school, business and EBeBP alike, but provided the opportunity for employers to meet with teachers and young people who have been successfully involved in activities that have engaged employers in the past.

The schools involved from East Berkshire included:
The Pines School, Bracknell on Monday 18th October 2010
Slough & Eton School, Slough on Tuesday 19th October 2010
Windsor Girls School, Windsor on Tuesday 19th October 2010
Montem Girls School, Slough on Wednesday 20th October 2010

Embracing community ties offer a variance of benefits for businesses. Some of these include:

- recruiting the next generation of talented workers
- opportunity to meet future customers
- helping employees develop a wide range of relevant workplace skills
- improving employee job satisfaction by giving back to the community where they live and work
- demonstrating commitment to the community
- positive public relations in the local catchment

During the Visit Our Schools week the Education and Employers Taskforce ran a national and regional media campaign working with the national education and business media, also local newspapers, radio and TV.  This included a 16 page supplement in the Financial Times.

EBeBP contacts for Visit Our Schools:  Christina Skinner, Business Engagement Executive, & Nancy Lalor, Head of Work Based Learning.
